The works selected for the recording illustrate different aspects of Purcell’s production; secular and sacred vocal music interspersed by certain instrumental pieces. Purcell was particularly fond of compositions based on a recurring bass figure , and some of his best known and most ingenious works are of this type. It would appear that strictly delimited material frequently inspired Purcell to tryout his composition technique and to test the limits of harmony – with splendid results. The present recording includes no fewer than seven of these ground basses.
